Which bones are considered the smallest in the skull?

The lacrimal bones are indeed the smallest bones in the skull. Located in the medial wall of each eye socket, the lacrimal bones play a crucial role in the structure of the orbit, contributing to the formation of the eye socket along with other bones. Their small size is significant as they contain the lacrimal fossa, which houses the lacrimal sac, important for tear drainage.

In contrast, the mandible, maxillae, and palatine bones are considerably larger. The mandible, or lower jaw bone, is the largest and strongest bone of the face. The maxillae, or upper jaw bones, form the central part of the face and provide structure to the upper jaw, while the palatine bones make up parts of the hard palate and contribute to the orbits as well. Each of these bones has larger and more complex shapes and functions compared to the small and relatively simple lacrimal bones.
